Last weekend, during the second race meeting on Mount Panorama's new tarmac, the Australian Formula 3 championship broke the outright lap record at least three times before Simon Hodge did the lap you see above. His Mygale M11-Mercedes Benz lapped the 6.213 km circuit in just 2:02.6701, for an average speed of 113.3 mph (182.33km/h).
Back in February at the Bathurst 12 Hour, Shane Van Gisbergen took advantage of the new tarmac to set a record of 2:03.8506 in his McLaren 12C-GT3. Van Gisbergen's record was obliterated last weekend, as the high downforce single seaters were able to find more pace than the high powered GT cars.
The V8 Supercar lap record currently sits at 2:08.4651, set by Jamie Whincup in a Ford Falcon back in 2007. With the pace shown on the new tarmac, Whincup's record may be in danger come October.
